Presentation: Today we will have Dr. Rieber share with the class some information on the M.Ed in Instructional Technology, Instructional Design and Development. Please give him your undivided attention.

Wrapping up the term:

1. Today is the last day to turn in your late pass.
2. Make sure your UGA email mailbox is not full in case I can't access your portfolio. Email me an alternative email address and a telephone number where I can reach you. I will email your grades for the Assure Lesson Plan and Final Reflection.
I will make two attempts to reach you. First, I will first try to email you so make sure your UGA account is not over its quota. Then I will try to leave a phone message. This will be done as a courtesy but it is up to you to make sure your final portfolio is complete.

Opportunity to earn 2 extra points to your final grade: by providing a peer-evaluation of their final reflection.
1. You must have attended today's class to participate. Make sure you have signed in!
2. Define what criteria you used to evaluate your classmates final reflection. This section should not be more than a paragraph long.
3. Then use your criteria to evaluate your classmate’s reflection.
4. Make sure you include feedback to the following questions: What was done well? What suggestions would you offer to improve the reflection? In order to receive the full two points you must provide feedback on the questions.
6. Email your peer-evaluation/feedback to your classmate and to my email address at azgambo@gmail.com
7. Your classmate will need the peer evaluation by Friday. I will begin grading the final reflection on Friday morning.

Friday, December 5, Wrapping up the Assure Model and Final Reflection

Today we will be working on the last component of the assure model - Evaluate and Revise.
We will continue to use the online guide as a resource for this component.

I am also introducing the final reflection which will become the content for your introduction page for the portfolio you have created. Make sure you answer all of the questions and that the refection is in essay/paragraph format. Included in this project is the Final Portfolio Review.

Your final reflection and final portfolio review is due December 9th. Make sure that you have turned in your Late Pass by Monday, December 8th and you have provide your phone number/alternate email address. Please monitor your UGA email address quota so that I can email you if I have questions on your submissions and email your Assure Model/Final Reflection grade. I will be grading the final reflection and final portfolio online through the link on our course webpage. Make sure I can access your webpage.

On Monday, attendance will be taken. We will have a 5-minute presentation on the Master's Program in Instructional Design and Development by Dr. L. Reiber who is the coordinator for the program. Please be on time. The rest of class time will focus on wrapping up your Assure Model and Final Reflection. Your Assure Model will be due at the end of class. I am no longer requiring a hard copy. It will be graded online so make sure that I can access it.

Wednesday, December 3- Assure Model Continued

Today we will continue to work on the Assure Model. Continue working on the tutorial available on the provided site: http://www.coe.uga.edu/~gthomas/summer/assure.htm You were to have completed the "Select the Methods, Media, and Materials."

Now we will wrap up the sections entitled: Utilize Media and Materials, Require Learner Participation.

Utilize Methods, Media, & Materials

Plan of how you are going to implement your media and materials. For each type of media and/or materials listed in the "Select the Methods, Media, and Materials" section describe in detail how you are going to implement them into your lesson to help your learners meet the lesson's objective. Please write in full sentences; do this for each item.

In order to utilize materials correctly there are several steps to creating good student-centered instruction.

1. Preview the material- Never use anything in class you haven’t thoroughly checked out.

2. Prepare the material- Make sure you have everything you need and that it all works.

3. Prepare the environment- Set up the classroom so that whatever you're doing will work in the space you have.

4. Prepare the learners- Give the students an overview, explain how they can take this information and use it and how they will be evaluated up front.

5. Provide the learning experience- Teaching is simply high theatre. Showmanship is part of the facilitators job. Teaching and learning should be an experience not an ordeal.

Require Learner Participation

Describe how you are going to get each learner actively and individually involved in the lesson.

Ex: games, group work, presentations, skit, etc.

Remember that the days of sage on the stage are gone. Our role in the classroom today is one of a guide on the side and students, especially with technology connected lessons, need to experience learning. All activities should provide opportunities to manipulate the information and allow time for practice during the demonstration of the skill.

On the template, list in sequential order what will occur during the implementation of your learning activity. Make sure to include time durations for specific segments.

On Friday, you will work on the " Evaluate and Revise" section and share your Assure Model with a classmate. Make sure you have completed as much as possible so that you can receive constructive feedback.

Today we will continue working on the Assure Model (http://www.coe.uga.edu/~gthomas/summer/assure.htm). At our last class meeting we wrapped up Web 2.0 and you were given an Assignment:
To do:
1. Review the Assure Model Website provided
2. Save the template onto your memory stick
3. Complete the A (Analyze Learners) section of the Assure Template provided in the course projects page. Make sure you save it on your memory stick.
4. Go through the two exercises on creating “State Objectives” on the Assure Model website and be prepared to share two of your objectives with the class on Monday when we return from Thanksgiving break. Make sure they conform to the ABCD requirements. (A= Analyze Learners, B = Behavior, C = Condition, D = Degree)

We will review the project requirements. The class will share their Analyze Learners section and Objectives. We will continue to work on the ASSURE Model.
There are many different lesson plan formats, but one that helps to organize teaching and learning through the use of technology is the ASSURE model:

For your Capstone Project for the course, you will select one of the projects you created this semester and write an original lesson plan that uses that project to teach a Georgia Performance Standard. You will use the ASSURE model as your lesson plan format. A web page has been created (web page) that will walk you through the development process step-by-step.
Your final product (due Monday, December 8th at the end of class) will be the completed instructional plan template. It will most likely by 3-4 pages long. The largest section of your template should be the "Require Learner Participation" section, as this is where you will describe your actual learning activity -- what your learners will be doing.

Please note that your late pass can not be used for the Capstone Project or the Final Reflection.

Please turn in your unused Late Passes by Dec. 5th so I can credit you with your extra points or your make-up (absences) opportunities.

Today we will continue working on the Web 2.0 project. I will begin grading the Web 2.0 project on Monday during our Thanksgiving break. I will return a hard copy to you when we get back from our break. I also want to talk to you about Friday's assignment.

Assignment for Friday, November 21, asyncronous class:
On Friday we will not meet face-to-face but you do have an assignment. Your assignment is to review the Assure Model. Review the following website which we will be using as our guide: http://www.coe.uga.edu/~gthomas/summer/assure.htm

Instead of the recommended reading on the site above, read the following:

"The ASSURE model is helpful for designing courses using different kinds of media. This model assumes that instruction will not be delivered using lecture/text book only. It allows for the possibility of incorporating out-of-class resources and technology into the course materials. This model will be especially helpful for instructors designing online courses. "

This model emphasizes:
Teaching to students with different Learning Styles, and
Constructivist learning where students are required to interact with their environment and not passively receive information. "

Today I will introduce our Web 2.0 project. It can be found as one of the links in our course projects webpage. You will experience collaborative learning for this task. You will create your team wiki today. What is a wiki? See the youtube video below. It provides a great explanation.

Friday, November 14th

I have moved the due time for the webquest as due at the end of class on Friday, November 14th. Friday's class will be an independent workday and attendance will is not required but it can be used as a make-up day for one (1) previous absence. If you use Friday as a make-up day you must be working on materials for this course project and stay for the entire class. I will be available at the lab during our usual class time. If no one is present in class on Friday 15 minutes after class has started you will find me in my office, 626B.

This time is set aside to provide me an opportunity to work with student's individually. In addition, several students have completed their webquests so it will not be necessary to attend Friday's class. I have also attached the evaluation document to our class website's WebQuests page. Turn in a typed hardcopy on Monday, November 17th at the beginning of class. Today select which class member's webquest you will evaluate. Make sure that you have notified your classmate that you will be evaluating their website and that it should be ready by the end of class on Friday, November 14th.

One of the main parts of a WebQuest is the Process section. The Process section is composed of the specific steps a student should take to accomplish the assigned task. The Process section also provides age-appropriate resources for students to use to complete their task. Finding useful resources requires more than just a Google search. Using vetted resources from reliable sites is important. One site that many K-12 teachers find useful is Thinkfinity (http://www.thinkfinity.org). Thinkfinity is a gateway site - which means that from the main page you can access multiple resources - for K-12 and most subject areas. So, regardless of your Webquest topic, you should be able to find student resources through Thinkfinity.

You'll want to explore the site on your own by using the search tool - but you'll also want to "sit in" on the training session located here: http://www.thinkfinity.org/pd/K12selfguidedtraining.aspx

This training session will give you a comprehensive look at all of the resources available in Thinkfinity. In order to make full use of Thinkfinity it's mandatory that you view the training session (and it really doesn't take the 20 minutes it claims!)

After completing the training session - use your new knowledge of Thinkfinity to locate a minimum of 5 resources for the Process section of your WebQuest. You may find resources outside of Thinkfinity - but for those that you located with the use of Thinkfinity - please identify them as such.

Creating your WebQuest:
1. The web page you created for the "Foundations" assignment will be the page that contains the content for your reflection questions. Make sure your reflection is in essay format and doesn't have the questions embedded into the text. It is on this page that you will create a link to your actual webquest activity.
2. You will create another webpage that will hold the content for the actual webquest activity. On the header you will include the following: Your WebQuest Title, Your Name and a link to the "Introduction" page you created for the Foundations assignment.
3. On the page you created for the Webquest content, you will change the layout to one without a navigational bar.

You have probably noticed that there are different approaches to creating your WebQuest content page - example: Create a web page for each section of your WebQuest. Example: one page for Introduction, one page for tasks, etc. I don't recommend this method since it adds a lot to time creating web pages and linking them together.

Recommendation: Post all of your webquest content in one web page. This reduces the amount of time it takes to create your webquest and reduces the amount of clicking the student or teacher using your webpage will need to do.

Wednesday, October 29 - Introduction to WebQuests

What is a WebQuest?

What exactly is a WebQuest? What are its main characteristics? What are your initial reactions to WebQuests in terms of teaching and learning? What advantages and disadvantages do you see in teaching with WebQuests? What standards in your content area lend themselves to WebQuests?

Viewing exemplary webquests is a good way to get started on your own. Go to the main WebQuest page and click the words "Find WebQuests" on the left navigation bar. Using the Curriculum/Grade Level Matrix (in the middle of the page), spend a few minutes viewing 2 or 3 WebQuests in your content area.

Hopefully, you're beginning to formulate an idea for a "hook" for your own WebQuest. It may be related to work you have already done in our class or work you are currently completing in other courses. It could even be something completely new in your content area. After you have some ideas review the webquest rubric so that you are clear on what is expected. Before Wednesday's class, you'll want to identify your WebQuest topic. Use this website to help you in the selection process.

Generally, a good WebQuest topic should have some inherent complexity, such as controversial issues, multiple perspectives, unknowns, etc. The topic needs to have your students take information in and transform it, using their own judgement and creative problem-solving techniques -- a LoTi level 4 or higher -- the learning should be authentic. Certain topics tend to lend themselves more to the WebQuest format than others.

Type a response to the following questions and bring them to class on Monday, November 3:

1. Briefly describe your topic
2. Why did you choose this topic?
3. How will your WebQuest be tied to Georgia or national curriculum standards?
4. How will web resources play an important role in your WebQuest?
5. How will your WebQuest require students' deep understanding or higher-level thinking instead of mere comprehension?

Today, three classmates will be sharing their PowerPoint games with us. Our focus is to experience the PowerPoint game as students and to think about what it would take to put our PowerPoint games into action.

I am currently working on the research paper that will direct my dissertation. Because this is an intense process, I have asked Gretchen Thomas, to teach the WebQuest Section of our course projects. Gretchen Thomas is the coordinator for all of the EDIT 2000 courses and teaches sections of the course as well. Gretchen Thomas will provide you with her contact information.

I will grade your project submissions. This includes WebQuests and PowerPoint games projects. I will email you your PowerPoint games grades. Please make sure that you you have space on your UGA mail. Gretchen will be in charge of the class until November 10th.

On Monday, you worked in teams to increase your questions to a higher level of learning and to refine your game directions.Today, we will work on the template. Most of the technical skill you need was acquired when we created seating charts during the Productivity Tools Assignment.

Using the drawing toolbar in PowerPoint will allow you to customize your game template. Action buttons are easier than they seem. Being slow and methodical makes it easier to create action buttons that direct the user to the correct feedback.

Due on Monday, October 27th, your completed PowerPoint game project. That includes the powerpoint linked to your webpage, the completed handouts and your reflection content for your web page. Print out the rubric and check off the completed components.

Volunteer Opportunity: I am asking for two or three volunteers to demonstrate their game on Monday, October 27th. The volunteer will earn a late pass or make up for one absence. The late pass will only be used to turn in late work and can not be used for extra credit. The volunteer will need to have all their materials ready. For example, if they are using a game board, dice or other materials they must have enough of them for everyone in the class to play.

Today you will work in teams to help each other refine your PowerPoint game questions. You will also share your ideas for the directions for your games.
To have ready by Wednesday:
1. Have your finalized questions saved in a word document on to your memory stick.
2. Have your directions written into a word document and saved to your memory stick so that you can import it into the template we will be working with on Wednesday.
3. If you are struggling with writing game directions this link may help.
4 Select game pieces and look at possible game boards. I have a link to a tutorial on how to create a game board using PowerPoint. I recommend the "creating your 2 fold game board template."You just modify the board to suite your needs. Change colors of squares, change shapes, etc. Another option is to look at previous student's game boards. Select edit slides and you can modify them if they are not screen shots - feel free to copy and paste. (Make sure that you give them credit!)

Wednesday, October 14th, Blooms Taxonomy and PowerPoint Games

Today we will focus on the PPT Games Assignment. Let's spend some time looking at the description now that you have had the opportunity to take a look at last semesters ppt games.

After we review the rubric/requirements for the PowerPoint Games project, we will discuss how to create questions using Blooms Taxonomy.

PowerPoint games: Addressing learning styles is important when designing activities to teach content standards. Inspiration and Kidspiration software allow an educator to do just that -- by addressing needs of visual learners. Our Digital Storytelling project provided another venue to address the needs of different type of learners. Technology also allows educators to respond to various learning theories - from behaviorism to constructionism. Today we'll talk about PowerPoint games: what they are and how they help students construct their own knowledge -- constructionism.

What is constructionism? Constructionism sees learning as a dynamic process in which learners construct new ideas or concepts on their current/past knowledge and in response to the instructional situation. Constructivism implies the notion that learners do not passively absorb information but construct it themselves. Today we'll talk about PowerPoint games: what they are and how they help students construct their own knowledge -- constructionism. It's important to know a little bit of background on the PowerPoint games project before we begin so we will review the PowerPoint Project requirements and then take a look at examples from previous semesters.

Many EDIT 2000 students have created their own games and more and more K-12 classrooms are using PowerPoint games as a way to address content standards through constructionism. Today review 3 (three) PowerPoint games from previous semesters. On your blog post your reflection based on your experience playing one (1) of the games from Spring 08.Your blog should be entitled "PowerPoint Games as a learning tool."

Your reflection questions are:

1. What was the subject/theme of the ppt game (Read the content for the corresponding web pages and provide a link to the web page you accessed)

2. Did the technology get in the way or enhance the way the subject was being taught?

3. How would you change the questions in order to enhance the ppt game?

4. What do you think they did well and would incorporate into your future PowerPoint game?

5. How do you think you would use powerpoint games in your classroom?

Wednesday, October 8, Uploading your photostory, recording and project requirements review

Today we will learn how to upload our digital story to youtube. The tutorial can be found here (sign up for youtube account) and here (how to upload)

You will need to create a youtube account at www.youtube.com and if your digital story is ready you can upload it to youtube. To load the youtube link to your website you can do the following:
1. Link your youtube video by using the link function and pasting your youtube address at the prompts for the web address of the video you want to import.
or
2. You can embedd your youtube video by using the insert function and then selecting video (sometimes it is hidden in the drop down menu) and then paste your youtube address at the prompt for the web address of the video you want to import.

See the sample Digital Storytelling webpage I have created. It can be found here. Please note that this is only an example of how to link/embed your digital story onto your Kidspiration/Inspiration webpage on your site. The example doesn't have the reflection content included based on the reflection questions.

Monday, October 6, Review Storyboard and Begin recording Digital Story

Today, we will work in teams of two. We will review each others narrations and then begin recording our digital lessons/worksheet directions. You will help each other by reviewing the rubric and making sure that you and your team member have completed all of the requirements.

I have access to the microphones and you will bring your headphones to class. We will expect everyone to have completed uploading, arranging their images and have finalized the script for the project. We will finalize recording on Wednesday and on Friday we will upload our work onto youtube.

Friday, October 3, Working on your Digital Story, Storyboard and Importing Images

Today you were to bring in 10 images and your completed storyboard.

Storyboard:
Images: Make sure you have coordinated your pictures so that they are in sequential order.
Match your images with your script.
Script: Make sure your script is as suscint as possible. Make sure you address the Who, What, Where, When, Why and How for your lesson/worksheet narration.
Here are some sample target questions:
Who: Who will be working on this worksheet/lesson? Will they be working in teams? Will it be a group activity?
What: What will be due? What is considered an excellent submission (worksheet)? What occur as a result of this lesson? A quiz? A test?
Where: Where will this lesson occur? In the classroom? In the lab?
When: When will the material be covered? For how long? When is the worksheet due? Will this be a take home assignment or done in class?
Why: What is the purpose of this lesson? Your standard should help you with explaining this.
How: How will it be turned in? How will it be graded?
These are just some of the sample questions and they are not in a specific order. When you turn in your hard copy of your script make sure you indicate where you answered the "Who, What, Where, When, Why and How" in your script. I have also added this directions to your project description.

Importing Images: The rest of class time will be spent on using Photostory to import your images. Remember, you are working in teams, so help each other. Make sure you save all of your work so you can access it later. I recommend that you save it on your jump drive and back it up on MyDrive.

On Monday and Wednesday, bring your headphones to class so that we can start recording your narrations. I will bring the microphones with me to class.

Wednesday, October 1, Digital Storytelling

Due today: Inspiration and Kidspiriation project. I am still working on grading Productivity Tools. I hope to have completed grading all papers by next Monday.

Today we will begin discussing how to use Digital Storytelling as a tool. We will be using PhotoStory software to create our Digital Story. The theme for our digital story will be one of your concept maps. The photostory will be used to introduce the lesson at a very high level. It will not provide much detail on each section of the concept map. Let's take a look at the project description.

Today, you will review the tutorial. You will be working in teams of 2 to help each other work on their individual photostory. Each student is to create their own digital story based on their concept map.
Getting started:
1. Due Friday: Find at least 10 photos that you could possibly use. (You only need 5 but it have 10 just in case the image doesn't look the way you want it to.)
2. Due Friday: Save them to your jump drive. (Don't forget to bring your jump drive to class).
3. Due Friday: A completed storyboard worksheet. How do you create it?

a. Number your photos
b. Order them in the way you want them to appear in your show
c. Write your script. (Wait on recording your narration until the end!) I have access to 10 microphones but since we are working in teams that should be enough for our class.

4. On Monday and Wednesday, I am requesting that you bring a set of headphones (if you have a headset with microphones that would be great but if you don't that is okay). They can be the earbuds from your iPod as well. The ear piece from your phone headphones will not likely work. You will only need one per team, since you are working together.
5. Next Wednesday, we will learn how to import your photostory to youtube. I will be testing this out myself. I have never done it so we will be teaching each other. :)
6. Project is due on Friday, October 10th. Your Digital storytelling webpage should have the reflection content and a link to your photostory on youtube.

One should be a group activity and one should be a individual activity.

Today we will look at Kidspiration and time will be provided for you to brainstorm on your Kidspiration/Inspiration project. Don't forget to download Inspiration/Kidspiration from the site if you plan on working on your project from home.

Today we will look at the tutorial and in teams create a worksheet. This will provide you an opportunity to learn how to use the software.

Update on the Kidspiration and Inspiration project. Please print out the rubric and check off the completed requirements for the project.

What is due on Monday?
1. Your all about me inspiration concept map.
2. Have the teacher worksheet filled for your 2 projects. One should be a Inspiration and one should be on Kidspiration. You will not turn it in until the due date but be ready to share your ideas with the class on Monday.
3. Come to class with questions regarding your project. The rest of Monday will be an in-class workday. Attendance will be taken.

September 24, Kidspiration/Inspiration- Focus on Inspiration ("All About Me Concept Map) and introduction of project

Your understanding of technology's place in the classroom is really starting to come together. You are learning that technology is not used in K-12 classrooms just to make learning more fun. Technology tools can be used in conjunction with good teaching strategies to address various learning styles and student needs.

Today we will be looking at visual learning software to create concept maps -- Inspiration and Kidspiration. Both tools allow PreK-12 students to see a concept and its connecting themes and ideas. During class today, we will create an "All About Me" concept map. These will be turned in at the beginning of class on Monday. You "All About Me" concept map should include three layers of concepts, color coding, pictures, links that are identified and at least one note. The goal is to learn how to use the main features of the software program.

For the Inspiration/Kidspiration class project, you'll create two (2) activities for your subject area/grade level -- one for a whole group lesson and one for a small group or individual lesson. You'll also want to download a 30 day trial Inspiration and Kidspiration from this website (http://www.inspiration.com/) so you can work on the assignment outside of the lab. I have found that this website can be down sometimes so I highly recommend that you download it to your computers as soon as possible.

Monday, September 22, Snapshots, Linking Documents and worksheets

Today we will focus on creating screenshots of our work, linkining of documents to your website and the final product, which is creating a worksheet.

Creating Screenshots: We will review how to create screenshots and how to add them to your website. The handout on how to use the different Mac and PC functions will be used.Take a look at how many screenshots will be needed. Note that you will only take screenshots of a few of the products you have created for Productivity tools.

Linking your documents to your webpage. How to link documents can be found here. We will use the file cabinet method.

Creating Worksheets: Last but not least we will take a look at how to create worksheets. We will be using Puzzle Maker or Word Sheet Generator as a resource for creating our worksheets. I have found puzzle maker much easier to use than the other resources.

How to successfully complete this assignment:
1. Review the rubric carefully. I will use the rubric for grading your submissions. I will require you to attach the provided print out of the rubric. You are to check the completed components of the individual product submissions.

2. The assignment is due on Friday, September 26th at the beginning of class. Try to make it your goal to save your Late Pass and earn the two extra points to your final grade. On Wednesday, we will be moving on to our next topic: Kidspiration and Inspiration (concept mapping).

3. Spell check your assignments, make sure you have all the screenshots and the documents linked to your webpage.

4. Submit hard copies/print outs of the products you have created. Do not print out your reflection based content. I will grade that online.

5. Ask questions. Email me if you are struggling with any portion of this assignment.

6. On Wednesday we will begin discussing Kidspiration and Inspiration as a concept mapping tool. No more class time will be provided for Productivity Tools.

MS Powe rP oi nt is a dynamic software tool that allows one to create presentations. PowerPoint provides you with the opportunity to list information, display graphics (including animations), concept maps, and tables. Short movies, hyperlinks, and music may also be embedded in PowerPoint presentations.We will spend more class time on learning about PowerPoint later in the semester. For this part of the Productivity Tools project you will learn to use the drawing tools in PowerPoint to create a seating chart. Pictograph

Today we will work on creating a pictograph. What is a pictograph? A graphical representation that shows numerical information by using picture symbols. A form of bar graph with the bars replaced by rows or columns of symbols. Note: I have posted a link to an example of a pictograph on our Productivity Tools Description. In order to orient ourselves, I have provided a link to a video regarding how to create a pictograph. It is called "Making a Pictograph in Excel." The tutorial we will be using to create our pictograph is called "An "excel"lent way to create pictographs for younger students." Make sure you are using the rubric as a guide to make sure that you are meeting the requirements for Productivity Tools Assignment.

Monday, September 15, Word Templates and Excel

Today we will quickly discuss how to customize your word-based productivity tools. How add clip art, word art, tables and bulleted lists. There are many, many ways to approach this but I will only demonstrate one way.

After we discuss how to modify word-based productivity tools we will discuss how to use Excel as a means for our attendance sheet and grade sheet. Wednesday we will discuss how to create a pictograph and how to use PowerPoint to create a seating chart. Friday will be an independent work day. Since there are so many security protocols at the lab I have allocated one day for you to work on your own. I will not be in the classroom but I will check my email frequently in case you have some questions.

September 12, Assessment and Introduction to Productivity Tools

During this session we will discuss how to use a rubric for sucessfully completing assignments.
We will use the Productivity Tools Assignment to discuss how to use a rubric.

The goal of the Productivity Tools Assignment is not to gain expertise in any of the 3 tools - but to become familiar with how K-12 students and teachers can use the tools for teaching and learning. For this assignment you will use various productivity tools: Word, Excel, and PowerPoint to prepare materials for your class.

The rest of class time will be utilized in creating our first requirements for the assignment.

Due on Monday:
Have templates saved on your jump drive for the following
1. Tri-fold Brochure or Newsletter
2. Calendar
3. Business Cards or Student Name Tags
4. Certificates/Hall Passes

You can take a look at the templates available through the Microsoft office website but due to security protocols at the lab the templates often do not open. So if those are the ones you want to use you will need to download them somewhere else other than the lab.

You can take a look at the submissions from the previous semester (linked on this blog and our course website) and use those as a template. The content, including the images, must be your own! Be creative and create your own original work.

I will be returning your late pass quizes to you today. We will discuss how to use your late pass and review any questions you may have on the late pass quiz.

You have successfully completed all of foundation for the teacher portfolio web pages. Only one more link to go...a link to your new blog. On Friday, I asked you to review the blog reflection questions that will be the content for your blog. We will discuss the guidelines for submitting your reflections on your blog. Let's discuss the questions so that we are all on the same page.

Then we will create a blog with eblogger. The name of your blog should be the same as the name for your website, example: anitazgambo123. After we create our first blog posting we will create a link to our blog on teacher portfolio.

Your first blog posting, a response to the reflection questions, is due on Friday, September 12. How will I access your posting? I will use the link that you have created on your teacher portfolio.

Today we will discuss our vision of the classroom of the future. What do you think the typical classroom will look like in 15 years? What are the technological know-hows that are assumed in your current classes? Let's look at the typical student profile in more depth. Did you know that classrooms are no longer limited by classroom walls. What type of technology will the teacher use to meet the needs of their students? There are standards regarding the use of technology in the classroom. The Levels of Technology Implementation (LOTI) is used to quantify what is going on in the classroom. You'll be referring to these levels, along with standards, in all facets of your project work for our class. We will use the information from the LoTi website, the assessment tool used at the Georgia Department of Education for "technology use and integration in K-12 classrooms." We will discuss the different levels of technology use and integration in K-12 classrooms. Please feel free to use the handouts as we are discussing the different levels.

We won't have time today to create your blog. Your blog will contain your reflection postings on assigned questions. The questions for our first posting are listed below. Take time this weekend to think about them so you can have an idea about what you want to write for your first blog posting.

1. Which GP Standard did you select and which grade level? Do you think that the standard is doable? What do you think are the benefits and challenges of a set performance standard?
2. Based on your learning style which teaching strategy would you use to teach the selected subject for your classroom? (Make sure you mention which learning style you are addressing).When do you think one of the other teaching strategies we discussed in class would be more appropriate for students with learning styles than differ from yours?
3. What do you feel are the challenges and benefits of teaching with technology? Which LOTI Level do you feel most represents the typical classroom for your selected grade and subject?
4. Find one article on how technology is used in the classroom. Provide a short summary (less than one paragraph.

I have finished grading your autobiography page and the foundation for your teacher portfolio.
In the autobiography page, I noticed that some students left their "to do" list on their site. Make sure you remove it from your page. Those notes are just a reminder of what you need to do to accomplish the assignment. For the foundations page, make sure you have completed the naviational bar and that the web pages are listed in the correct order (like our handout).

I am still working on grading your late pass quiz. I will try to have it done by Monday.

September 3rd, Teaching Strategies (Jigsaw Activity)

How do educators know how to teach? What strategies are used to address certain learning styles? How does learning theory impact teaching strategies? Is lecturing about your subject matter all that is necessary?

Today we will discuss 4 different teaching strategies. There are many strategies but I have selected 4 due to time constraints. Each person will be assigned to a team and each team will be answering the following questions about their teaching strategies. Everyone should take notes of their discussion and select a team member to fill out the Team findings form. Then we will regroup into new teams so that you can share what you have learned with your fellow classmates.

Due today at the beginning of class:
1. Foundation for teaching portfolio with a working navigational bar
2. Content for autobiography
3. Late Pass Quiz

In order for me to grade your portfolio, you need to test out the links to your websites. They are posted on the second navigational bar on our course website. Make sure it is working or else I can't access you teaching portfolio submission.

In our last two class meetings we discussed the Georgia Performance Standards and learning styles. For today's class we will begin our discussion on teaching strategies. We have discussed how educators know what to to teach? Now we will discuss different strategies that educators use to teach and to address certain learning styles. This exercise will help us reflect on how learning theory impacts teaching strategies? Do you feel that lecturing about your subject matter all that is necessary?

Today we will have a discussion on what you have learned about your Learning Styles.

We will also talk about the navigation bar on your teacher web portfolio. You will work in teams to figure out how to modify your navigation bar.

Late Pass Quiz: The Late Pass Quiz is available as an attachment from our course website (Syllabus page). You need to allow the site to set a cookie so that the attachment will open. I have tested it so it should work. Email me if you have any problems opening the quiz. Turn in a print out of the quiz on Wednesday, September 3rd.

August 27th, Learning Styles and creating your teacher portfolio website

The last few classes have focused on Curriculum Standards. It helped us answer the questions

1. How do educators know what to teach?

2. How do they know what students should learn?

Now we will move on another piece of the learning puzzle, Learning Theories. The questions we will be asking ourselves are:

1. How do educators know how to meet the needs of the specific learners with which they are working?

2. Are their different types of learners?

3. Does everyone understand subject matter in the same way?

4. How can teachers identify the different types of learners in their classrooms?

In order to prepare for Friday's class:

1. A learning style quiz is available through Ashworth University that will help you to determine your learning style. Their website has a article and quiz entitled Discover Your Learning Style (2889). I have printed out the article and learning quiz for you to read. Bring your results of the learning quiz with you on Friday, August 27th and be prepared to share what you have learned.

Creating your Teacher Portfolio Website: The rest of our class time will focus on learning how to create a Google Page. The tutorial we will be using has some great directions but we will not be following the directions step by step. Keep it handy because it is a great reference tool. ****The foundation for your website is due Wednesday, September 3rd. This includes completing all of the components of your autobiography as listed in today's handout. That will give you an opportunity to ask questions on Friday.

Introducing the Learning Puzzle -One of our goals is to begin putting together the puzzle pieces that make up the learning and teaching process -- with a focus on tools and resources. The pieces are Curriculum Standards, Learning Theories, Resources and Tools and Teaching Strategies.

Every state has standards and every content area has national standards. There are even standards for technology integration. Georgia uses the Georgia Performance Standards.
A performance standard has four components: a content standard, illustrative tasks, examples of student work, and teacher commentary. Together, these components will be the teacher’s guide as to what to teach, how thoroughly to treat a topic, and what some instances of student work that meet the content standard might look like.

You'll also want to be familiar with the ISTE standards for technology integration -- this class, and your course projects, are based on those standards. From the Georgia Performance Standards website: select a grade level and subject area that will be the focus of your projects this semester. Important: Learn to navigate the http://www.georgiastandards.org/ (Georgia Performance Standards Website) so that you can select your subject area.

Gmail Account: You should have received a gmail invitation from my gmail account (azgambo@gmail.com). It is an invitation to create a gmail account. Please make sure you look for it in your UGA mail. Sometimes the UGA Mail system will place an email with a gmail extension into the junk folder. Please register for a gmail account by Monday. Please use the following naming convention for your gmail account: FirstnameLastname123. An example would be AnitaZgambo123. You can select your own password.

This will make it easier for me to access your future website. Please note that this should be the only time you will receive a email from my gmail address. Throughout the term, emails from me will be from my azgambo@uga.edu address. Please do not send me email to the azgambo@gmail.com address, since I don't check that address often. If you have any questions you should email me at azgambo@uga.edu I check that email address quite often.

Introduction: Write a brief (1-2 paragraph) introduction about yourself, current information, career plans, and where you see yourself in 5 years. On your own time, take a look at the examples available on the "Previous Student's Web Pages" Autobiography page.Turn in a print out of of your introduction on Wednesday, August 27th. Make sure it is saved on your USB.

Resume Reminder: Your resume is due on Wednesday at the beginning of class (hard copy). The mini-project description can be found on Friday's Blog (8/22/08). Make sure you have saved it onto your USB drive, we will use it on Wednesday. On your own time, take a look at the examples available on the "Examples from Previous Semesters" Autobiography page.

1. Explore the Georgia Performance Standards website and select a grade and subject level. You'll need to print a hard copy of these standards and place them in your 3-ring binder for reference purposes this semester. You likely refer to them quite often.

3. Write a introduction about yourself and save it onto your USB. It will become the content for one of your web pages.

4. Complete resume and submit a hard copy. Save a copy of your resume on your USB drive. We will use need to access it on Wednesday.

August 22nd - Set up USB, Intro to MyDrive, Autobiography

Today we continue working on creating a file structure on your key drive and to save a Word file with your contact information to your key drive (in case you lose it!). I will also hand out a tutorial on another possible means of backing-up your files, MyDrive. You can use MyDrive to save your work throughout the term. I will let you explore that option on your own.

If we have time we will begin discussing our first miniproject. As an opportunity for me to learn more about you (and to get a head start on one or our first mini-projects) you will need to submit a professional resume. A hard copy of your resume is due at the beginning of class Wednesday, 27th.
You are welcome to use resume template but the security system in the lab sometimes prevents you from opening a template. What I recommend is that you take a look at the resume's produced last spring. I will show you how to access their websites. If you find a template that you like feel free to save it to your jump drive and modify it with your information.

Wednesday, August 20th - Getting to know the lab, USB drives, Icebreaker

Today I will provide you with a quick review of our syllabus. Then we will work on completing three major goals:
1. Learning how to use a MAC and and Windows based PC
2. Learn how to use our USB drives
3. End with an icebreaker activity

Learning how to use a MAC and a Windows based PC

We use Macintosh and Windows computers in this lab -- so you'll need to become familiar with both operating systems. Working with a partner, explore the similarities and differences between the Macintosh and Windows machines. You'll be using both this semester, so you'll want to get the hang of the basics with each. If you are really familiar with Windows machines - you should be sitting at a Mac during our class and vice versa.

Then, use the handouts provided to create a file structure on your key drive and to save a Word file with your contact information to your key drive (in case you lose it!).

Welcome to EDIT 2000

The instructor for your EDIT 2000 class is Anita F. Zgambo. The syllabus will give you specifics on what to expect during the semester. Know the syllabus well -- there could be a quiz! The materials you'll need for this course are: a key drive and a 3-ring binder to keep track of handouts.

The purpose of this course is to help you to explore the tools that can support teaching and learning in a P-12 classroom. As you learn about these tools you will focus on the educational processes that these tools support -- not the technical skills that you acquire. In other words, this is not a course about learning computer skills in isolation; it is a course that will encourage you to find appropriate uses for technological tools in the P-12 classroom.

In order to find and document these appropriate uses of technology, you will work independently, in partners, and in groups to prepare educational activities for specific curriculum topics. You will play the role of a classroom teacher and use your content knowledge, understanding of teaching and learning strategies, and your technology skills to develop real applications for the various tools explored during the semester. Your final product will be a web-based set of activities to teach specific curriculum objectives.

For Wednesday:

1. Turn in your student information sheet.

2. Purchase a USB drive or clean up an old one (i.e. delete old files, etc.)
